Traveler

Traveler is an app to guide travelers through their entire flight experience, from their arrival at the airport to the moment they exit the plane.

This project is a work in progress. I will update the page with new work when I am able!

Please stay tuned for the final!

Problem Space

Airport travel can be stressful at the best of times. Experienced flyers may know the tips and tricks to best get around their home airport, but will be just as lost as a first time flyer in a new airport.

How might we make unfamiliar airports familiar even to newcomers?

Process

Research

  • Formative Research

  • User Interviews & Surveys

  • User Journey Map

  • Card Sorting

  • Competitor Profiling

User Journey Map

Insights:

  • Travelers have to use a variety of sources to get information, often on short notice.

  • Travelers (especially inexperienced ones) don’t often know where to find this information.

  • Current airline apps do not typically carry information outside of their own airline, and do not provide an end-to-end experience .

Insights

  • It is easiest for users to organize information chronologically based on when they will need it in their journey.

  • Travelers experience most stress surrounding the pre-boarding experience activities like check in and security.

  • Stress is lowest while on the flight, but creeps back up again when deplaning, especially when the traveler does not already have transportation arranged.

Conclusion: the app should be organized chronologically, presenting information based on when the users need it.

Moodboard

When creating the app, I wanted users to feel calm and at ease, even in a potentially stressful environment. Therefore:

  • Fonts and iconography should be kept simple.

  • The most calming color in the world is navy blue, according to a 2019 study, so this will be the brand’s primary color.

  • Data should be presented in a visually-focused format.

Lo-Fi Wireframes

Features:

  • Electronic boarding pass; also display at-a-glance flight information

  • Step-by-step tips for check in, security, terminal/gate, boarding, etc.

    • Gives heads-up notification if some step along the way will be impeded

  • After departing, app helps users navigate the new airport with tips for baggage, customs, and ground security .

Revisions:

  • Priority should be the checklist, because it gives the most comprehensive overview

  • Ticket information can be on a separate screen but should be easily accessible for quick checking.
